Liverpool unlikely to pursue replacement for Hugo Ekitike

Liverpool will not seek to replace Hugo Ekitike during the summer transfer window after the French forward suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon. Ekitike, who underwent surgery following the injury sustained against Paris Saint-Germain last month, is not expected to return until January at the earliest, ruling him out of the upcoming World Cup. Despite the long recovery period, Liverpool has decided against investing in another striker, having already spent significantly on Ekitike and Alexander Isak. Isak has faced his own injury issues, making only eight Premier League starts in the 2025/26 season. The club remains optimistic about Ekitike’s return to form and is exploring other options, including utilizing Florian Wirtz as a false nine and considering versatile wide-forwards to bolster their attacking lineup.

Why It Matters

This decision reflects Liverpool’s financial strategies and roster management amid injury challenges. Ekitike’s injury is a significant setback for the club, particularly as they aim to compete at high levels, including the domestic league and potential European tournaments. The club’s confidence in Ekitike’s recovery is crucial, as his performance will be essential for their attacking depth. Additionally, the reliance on younger players like Jayden Danns and Keyrol Figueroa highlights Liverpool’s focus on developing talent within their ranks, which could impact their long-term success.
