Palestinian Football Association President Jibril Rajoub declined to shake hands or stand next to Israel Football Association Vice President Basim Sheikh Suliman during the FIFA Congress on Thursday. Invited to the stage by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Rajoub resisted efforts to approach Suliman, despite Infantino’s attempts to mediate. Rajoub criticized the double standards regarding Israel’s participation in international football, asserting that stronger sanctions should be imposed against the country. He expressed his refusal to engage with Suliman, stating that sport should be respected, but argued that he could not shake hands with someone associated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Infantino emphasized the need for cooperation among all parties, while Suliman highlighted the unifying role of football and the importance of respect and equality within the sport.

Why It Matters

This incident reflects ongoing tensions between Israeli and Palestinian representatives, particularly in the realm of international sports. The Palestinian Football Association has long sought to suspend Israel from international competitions, especially amid heightened conflicts. Football, as a global sport, often serves as a platform for political issues, making it a focal point for broader geopolitical disputes. The complex relationship between the two nations continues to influence sports governance, with calls for sanctions and the push for peace remaining deeply intertwined.
