A Dutch national was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after authorities discovered 60 kg of khat concealed in his luggage. Police intercepted the suspect on Sunday as he was preparing to board a flight to London. The drugs were found during a routine inspection, leading to his immediate arrest. This incident follows the arrest of a Brazilian national for carrying cocaine valued at approximately R8.7 million, found hidden in their luggage just a day prior. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among various law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking. The Dutch suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on drug trafficking charges later this week.

Why It Matters

The arrests at OR Tambo International Airport highlight ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and smuggling in South Africa, a country that has long struggled with these issues. The detection of large quantities of drugs at the airport underscores the role of South Africa as a significant transit point for drug traffickers. Khat and cocaine are illegal substances that have been linked to various social and economic challenges in the region. The South African Police Service, in collaboration with other agencies, has increased vigilance at airports in response to the growing threat of international drug trafficking networks.
