Geraldton’s Universities Centre celebrated the graduation of 43 students from its class of 2026, encompassing various fields such as accounting, business, digital media, education, human services, nursing, and psychological science. The nursing program was the most popular, producing 19 graduates, with early childhood and primary education following with seven students. The graduation ceremony was held at Queens Park Theatre, attended by family, friends, and faculty. Jody Beven, chair of the GUC board, emphasized the center’s commitment to making higher education accessible for all, noting that nearly 40% of students come from low socio-economic backgrounds. Graduates Clancy Huggins and Liyamaria Thomas shared their experiences of balancing work and study, highlighting the practical benefits of their education. GUC now has a total of 648 graduates in its alumni network.

Why It Matters

Access to higher education is crucial for community development, particularly in regional areas where opportunities may be limited. Geraldton Universities Centre partners with CQUniversity, UniSQ, and Curtin University to offer local students pathways to degree-level education without relocating. Programs that support low socio-economic students and first-generation university attendees are vital in promoting equity in education, contributing to higher workforce participation and improved economic outcomes. As education continues to evolve, institutions like GUC play a significant role in addressing these challenges by providing tailored support to diverse student populations.
