Police have identified 16-year-old Nabil Askafe as the victim of a fatal shooting at Jackson Square mall in downtown Hamilton on Friday evening. A 14-year-old suspect, named Lucas Turnbull, is now wanted for second degree murder in connection with the incident. Officers responded to the scene around 5:10 p.m. where Askafe was found with life-threatening injuries and later died at the hospital. Det. Robert Di Ianni reported that Askafe, who recently immigrated from Syria with his family, was involved in a physical altercation outside the mall with Turnbull, who allegedly shot him with a firearm. The police are actively searching for Turnbull and have urged him to turn himself in, while also working to identify a second individual who fled the scene.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about youth violence and gun-related crime in Canada, where gun violence has been rising in recent years. According to Statistics Canada, firearm-related homicides increased by 27% between 2019 and 2020, underscoring a troubling trend. The Youth Criminal Justice Act allows for the identification of young offenders in certain circumstances, such as when they pose a danger to the public, indicating the seriousness of this case. The community’s response and the police’s efforts to address youth crime will be critical in shaping future prevention initiatives.
