Trump cancels Kushner and Witkoff trip to Pakistan for Iran talks

President Trump announced on Saturday the cancellation of a planned trip for U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Islamabad, Pakistan, for peace talks with Iran. He criticized the decision as a waste of time, citing confusion over Iran’s leadership and asserting, “we have all the cards.” Trump stated on Truth Social, “If they want to talk, all they have to do is call!” This announcement came after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had previously indicated that the envoys were set to engage in direct discussions aimed at a peace deal, following over 50 days of conflict initiated by U.S. and Israeli bombing of Iran. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Pakistan for talks with Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif, as Pakistan has been acting as an intermediary for U.S.-Iran discussions. The ongoing conflict has disrupted shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, contributing to rising oil prices and inflation in the U.S.

Why It Matters

The U.S.-Iran relationship remains tense, with ongoing military actions and diplomatic efforts intertwined. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for global oil supply, making the current conflict significant for international energy markets. The blockade of Iranian ports by the U.S. and the strikes on Iranian infrastructure have exacerbated the situation, leading to inflationary pressures in the U.S. The historical context of U.S.-Iran relations, marked by sanctions and military action, continues to impact global stability and economic conditions.
