New gas-powered data centers may exceed national greenhouse gas emissions

New natural gas projects linked to just 11 data center campuses in the U.S. are projected to emit more greenhouse gases than Morocco’s total emissions in 2024, totaling over 129 million tons annually. These developments are primarily intended to power data centers for major AI companies like OpenAI, Meta, Microsoft, and xAI, often bypassing traditional energy grids in favor of a model known as behind-the-meter power. As the demand for data centers grows, tech companies are opting for self-generated power sources due to delays in utility connections and public concerns over rising energy costs. Although emissions estimates from air permit documents tend to be conservative, even adjusted figures could still surpass Norway’s emissions for the same year. Experts express concern over the environmental impact as the influx of data centers drives demand for less efficient gas turbines.

Why It Matters

The surge in data center construction reflects a broader trend in the tech industry’s reliance on energy-intensive operations. Historical shifts away from fossil fuels are being challenged by the rapid expansion of AI and data processing needs, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions. The adoption of behind-the-meter power illustrates the industry’s shift toward self-sufficiency in energy production, which can exacerbate climate change issues. Current regulatory frameworks and energy policies may not sufficiently address the emissions from these new gas projects, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive energy reform.
