A 27-year-old man, Zakaria Senouci, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for robbing a 73-year-old man of a £30,000 Patek Philippe watch in central London. The incident occurred in April 2025, when Senouci, along with an accomplice, targeted Sunil Chopra near Hyde Park. CCTV footage captured the moment Senouci forcefully snatched the watch from Mr. Chopra’s wrist, leaving him with physical and emotional scars. The court was informed that Mr. Chopra, who had intended to pass the watch down to his son, is now considering leaving the UK due to the trauma from the robbery, which has left him feeling unsafe in his own neighborhood. Senouci, an Algerian asylum seeker, changed his plea to guilty on the first day of his trial, and his case will be reviewed for deportation upon completion of his sentence.

Why It Matters

The incident underscores rising concerns about public safety and violent crime in urban areas, particularly affecting vulnerable populations such as the elderly. Robberies involving high-value items like luxury watches have become more common, prompting calls for enhanced security measures and community support for victims. The psychological impact on victims, as highlighted by Mr. Chopra’s decision to potentially relocate, illustrates the broader societal effects of crime that extend beyond the immediate theft. This case also raises questions about the legal status and treatment of asylum seekers in the UK, particularly in relation to their involvement in criminal activities.
