Jayne Lewis, a seasoned beer judge, is participating in the Royal Agricultural Society of WA’s 2026 Perth Royal Food Awards, where she and other judges will evaluate some of the nation’s top brews at Claremont Showgrounds. The Perth Royal Beer Awards, established in 2007, has gained significant popularity, with this year’s judging scheduled for April 26-27, followed by the awards presentation on May 1. Lewis, who has 17 years of judging experience, explained that the evaluation process involves scoring beers on appearance, aroma, flavor, and technical quality against style guidelines. As a founder of Two Birds Brewing, she has a deep appreciation for Australia’s vibrant beer scene, particularly in Western Australia, which has been influential in shaping the country’s craft beer culture. The judging will include up to 40 blind tastings, leading to the selection of a Champion Beer from a shortlist of 18 to 20 entries.

Why It Matters

The Perth Royal Beer Awards are a significant event in Australia’s craft beer calendar, reflecting the growth and innovation within the industry since its inception. With Western Australia being a pioneer in the craft beer movement, the awards highlight the region’s contributions to the national beer landscape. The rise of non-alcoholic beers, now making up 10% of beer sales in Australia, indicates changing consumer preferences and the expanding diversity of beverage options in the market. Events like these not only celebrate excellence in brewing but also foster community and industry engagement, making them important for both producers and consumers.
