Alvaro Folgueiras, a 6’10 forward who transferred from Iowa, will join the Louisville basketball team for the upcoming season under coach Pat Kelsey. Last season, Folgueiras averaged 8.4 points in 21 minutes per game for the Hawkeyes and made a pivotal last-second three-pointer in the NCAA Tournament, contributing to an upset against the top-seeded team. Prior to his time at Iowa, he was named the 2024-25 Horizon League Player of the Year while playing for Robert Morris, where he averaged 14.1 points and 9.1 rebounds. Folgueiras is known for his shooting ability and strong passing skills, although he has faced challenges defensively. His addition to Louisville fills a critical need for a versatile forward who can enhance the team’s offensive flow.

Why It Matters

Folgueiras’ transfer to Louisville is significant as it enhances the team’s roster with a player who has demonstrated both scoring ability and playmaking skills. His previous accolades, including being named Horizon League Player of the Year, underline his potential impact at a higher level of competition. With the addition of a rim protector in Flory Bidunga, the team’s defensive structure may improve, potentially alleviating Folgueiras’ defensive shortcomings. This move also reflects Louisville’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and strengthen their program in the competitive landscape of college basketball.
