US detains Iran-linked tanker Tifani amid ceasefire negotiations

The U.S. military has detained the oil tanker M/T Tifani in the Indian Ocean for allegedly smuggling Iranian crude oil, as confirmed by the Pentagon. The operation occurred just before the expiration of a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran, amid ongoing negotiations. The Tifani, flagged in Botswana, was reportedly carrying about 2 million barrels of Iranian oil and has a history of ship-to-ship transfers in Southeast Asia. Iran condemned the seizure as “piracy at sea,” raising doubts about future talks.
