Hamas officials announce readiness to transfer small weapons under specific rules

Hamas has announced plans to relinquish thousands of automatic rifles and other small arms from its Gaza police force and internal security services. However, the disarmament will not extend to its military wing, the Izzadin al-Qassam Brigades. Officials from Hamas indicated that they have already engaged with other security agencies in Gaza to facilitate a governance transition to a Board of Peace and a technocratic committee. Despite this development, many Palestinians express concern that Hamas’s refusal to fully disarm could lead to renewed conflict with Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) anticipate that Hamas will begin disarming in the near future to prevent an Israeli re-invasion of Gaza, while the U.S. expects the group to surrender heavy weapons, including rockets and drones, by early May.

Why It Matters

The situation in Gaza remains precarious, as Hamas’s military capabilities are a significant factor in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Historically, tensions have escalated whenever disarmament efforts have faltered, leading to cycles of violence. The IDF’s expectation of Hamas’s disarmament follows a long history of failed negotiations and ceasefires in the region, highlighting the challenges of achieving lasting peace. Hamas’s control over military assets and the political landscape in Gaza directly impacts the stability of the area and the broader geopolitical dynamics involving Israel, the U.S., and neighboring countries.
