A life jacket worn by Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first-class passenger on the RMS Titanic, sold for $906,000 at an auction in Devizes, England. The flotation device, which was signed by Francatelli and other lifeboat survivors, exceeded its presale estimate of £250,000 to £350,000. This cream-colored life jacket, made of canvas and filled with cork, is one of the few surviving jackets from Titanic survivors and has been displayed in museums across the U.S. and Europe. Additionally, a seat cushion from one of the Titanic’s lifeboats sold for $527,000. Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge noted that the high prices reflect ongoing public interest in Titanic memorabilia and the legacy of its passengers and crew.

Why It Matters

The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,500 of the 2,200 passengers and crew aboard. The ship was touted as the world’s most luxurious liner and was considered “practically unsinkable.” The continued sale of Titanic artifacts highlights the enduring fascination with this maritime disaster, which encapsulates a wide range of human experiences and social classes, from the wealthy to the impoverished. Artifacts like Francatelli’s life jacket serve as tangible connections to this historically significant event, preserving the stories of those who survived and those who perished.
