High school senior Sara DeVolld from Alaska has launched a unique fashion initiative called Vintage Train Case, where she creates custom gowns embedded with LED lights to combat the state’s long periods of darkness and its associated mental health issues. As a fourth-generation Alaskan, DeVolld aims to bring joy and light to her community, which faces one of the highest suicide rates in the U.S. Her designs often take over 300 hours to complete, as she integrates STEM elements into her creations, a skill she developed through online tutorials. Recently recognized as a National STEM Champion, DeVolld shared her innovative approach to fashion at a national festival. In addition to her design work, she mentors younger students and promotes wellness through a program she created called Dance for Heart.
