Iran’s UN envoy labels US maritime blockade an act of aggression

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned the United States’ maritime blockade against Iran as a “clear act of aggression” that violates international law. During a UN General Assembly debate on a draft resolution regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Iravani criticized the U.S. for exacerbating the crisis through military force. He asserted that the blockade infringes on Iran’s sovereignty and disrupts lawful maritime commerce of third nations. Despite these tensions, Iravani expressed cautious optimism for ongoing diplomatic negotiations, urging the U.S. to adopt a more constructive approach. He also challenged the impartiality of the General Assembly President, accusing her of bias in her statements about the situation.

Why It Matters

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are significant due to the waterway’s role in global oil shipments, as it is a crucial passage for a significant portion of the world’s oil supply. The U.S. has maintained a military presence in the region to assure maritime security and counter Iranian influence, particularly following the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018. Iranian officials have repeatedly asserted their right to navigate and secure the Strait, emphasizing the geopolitical stakes involved. The ongoing negotiations are part of broader efforts to stabilize relations between Iran and Western nations, which have been strained for years over nuclear development and regional conflicts.
