First US Newsroom Strike for AI Protections by Journalists

Roughly 150 members of the Propublica Guild staged a 24-hour strike, marking the first major U.S. newsroom strike aimed at securing protections against layoffs related to artificial intelligence. The picket lines formed at ProPublica’s offices in New York City, Chicago, and Washington D.C., as union members called for management to finalize a collective bargaining agreement after two and a half years of negotiations. Key demands include “just cause” protections for terminations, wage increases to match the rising cost of living, and safeguards against layoffs resulting from AI adoption. Additionally, the Guild has filed an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming ProPublica implemented AI policies without negotiating with the union. A petition supporting the Guild’s contract terms has gathered around 4,200 signatures within a day of the strike.

Why It Matters

This strike highlights ongoing tensions between media workers and management over the increasing integration of AI technologies in journalism. The Propublica Guild’s actions reflect broader concerns within the media industry regarding job security and the potential for AI to disrupt traditional newsroom roles. As AI becomes more prevalent in various sectors, labor unions are increasingly advocating for protections against its impact on employment. The situation at ProPublica may set a precedent for other news organizations grappling with similar challenges, as unions push for clearer policies concerning AI and its implications for workers’ rights.
