A newly released music video filmed in Texas explores the little-known origins of the Māori hymn Whakaaria Mai and its connection to the late American evangelist Billy Graham. The project was created by Dr. Steve Elers, a Māori Anglican priest and academic who has recently taken a position as Associate Professor of Communication at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas. The video features Glory Griffin, a student at the university, who performs the hymn in te reo Māori and English, accompanied by Elers on guitar. The project received guidance from prominent figures including historian Mamae Takerei, Sir Eddie Durie, Reverend Dr. Wayne Te Kaawa, and iwi leader Bayden Barber.

Why It Matters

The hymn Whakaaria Mai holds cultural significance within Māori communities and reflects the intersection of indigenous spirituality and Western religious influences, particularly through figures such as Billy Graham, who played a pivotal role in global evangelism. This project not only highlights the collaboration between Māori traditions and American religious history but also showcases the importance of preserving and sharing indigenous narratives in contemporary formats like music videos. By bridging cultural gaps, such initiatives can foster greater understanding and appreciation of Māori heritage within a global context.
