Honsak scores twice to end Heidenheim’s winless streak

Heidenheim ended their 15-game winless streak in the Bundesliga with a convincing victory over Union Berlin, marking their first win since December 2025. Mathias Honsak was the standout player, scoring twice in the first half, with the first goal coming from a cross by Marvin Pieringer and the second following a throw-in by Marnon-Thomas Busch. Union Berlin attempted to mount a comeback after halftime, scoring one goal from a corner taken by Leopold Querfeld, but Heidenheim quickly restored their two-goal lead with a strike from substitute Budu Zivzivadze. This victory brings Heidenheim within six points of the relegation playoff spot, while Union Berlin has now gone three games without a win. Notably, 16-year-old Linus Guther made his Bundesliga debut for Union Berlin, becoming the second youngest player in the league’s history.

Why It Matters

This victory is crucial for Heidenheim as it breaks a lengthy winless run, potentially boosting team morale as they aim to escape relegation. Historically, teams that end long winless streaks often experience a revitalization in performance, which could be significant for Heidenheim’s season. Union Berlin’s struggles continue as they remain winless in three matches, raising concerns about their form as they fight to avoid relegation. The introduction of young talent like Linus Guther highlights the ongoing trend of clubs integrating youth into their squads in the Bundesliga, reflecting the league’s emphasis on developing emerging players.
