Israeli forces shelled areas surrounding the town of Jamla in Daraa province, southern Syria, as reported by Alikhbaria TV. The shelling was conducted by Israeli tanks, although no additional details were provided. Syrian authorities have not commented on these incidents. Israel frequently conducts military operations in southern Syria, particularly in the rural regions of Quneitra and Daraa, which include ground incursions, civilian detentions, and agricultural land damage. Since the occupation of the Golan Heights in 1967, Israel has expanded its military presence in the region, particularly following the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement after the ousting of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024, complicating stability efforts in Syria.
Why It Matters
The ongoing military actions by Israeli forces in southern Syria highlight the complexities of the region’s geopolitical landscape. Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights has persisted for over five decades, contributing to tensions between Israel and Syria. Furthermore, the persistent Israeli incursions undermine the Syrian government’s efforts to restore stability and attract foreign investment, which are crucial for economic recovery post-civil war. The targeting of agricultural land further exacerbates the humanitarian crisis, affecting food security and livelihoods in an already struggling nation.
