The Providence Friars have secured a commitment from Dink Pate, a former player with the NBA G League’s Westchester Knicks, as they bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming season. Pate, who had a notable high school career as a top-30 recruit, initially chose to play for the NBA G League Ignite rather than accepting offers from prestigious programs like Alabama, Arizona, and Kansas. Following his stint with the Ignite, he played for the Mexico City Capitanes before joining the Westchester Knicks, where he has averaged 17.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. This commitment marks the second major addition for Providence’s new head coach, Bryan Hodgson, who previously recruited four-star player Miles Byrd from San Diego State. The Friars have seen significant roster changes, with eight players entering the transfer portal after the last season, including three leading scorers.
Why It Matters
Dink Pate’s commitment to Providence is significant as it reflects the ongoing trend of players moving between leagues and colleges to maximize their potential and opportunities. By opting for the G League, Pate aimed to develop his skills at a higher level, which is increasingly common among elite recruits. His decision to choose college basketball over potential NBA contracts underscores the importance of maintaining eligibility for NCAA competition, especially following a season where Providence experienced considerable roster turnover. The Friars are working to strengthen their team dynamics as they face challenges from player departures and increasing competition in college basketball.
