North Carolina men’s basketball hires Michael Malone as head coach

The North Carolina Tar Heels have hired former NBA coach Michael Malone as their new head coach. Malone, who recently led the Denver Nuggets to an NBA championship in 2023, was fired during the 2024-25 season despite having a solid record of 47 wins and 32 losses. He has since worked as an analyst for ESPN and previously served as an assistant coach at the college level from 1999 to 2001. The Tar Heels parted ways with Hubert Davis in March after consecutive first-round exits in the NCAA Tournament, which followed a Final Four appearance in Davis’ first season. Malone’s appointment marks a significant move for the program, as he becomes only the fourth head coach since 2000, following in the footsteps of notable coaches like Roy Williams and Dean Smith.

Why It Matters

Michael Malone’s hiring is noteworthy as it reflects the Tar Heels’ attempt to revitalize their basketball program after a decline in performance. Historically, the program has produced numerous NBA stars and won six national championships, but has struggled recently to advance in the NCAA Tournament. Hubert Davis was let go despite a winning record, indicating high expectations within the program. Malone’s extensive experience in the NBA, coupled with his prior coaching background, positions him to potentially restore North Carolina’s prominence in college basketball.
