Why It Matters
Domestic violence remains a significant issue in New Zealand, with rates of family harm incidents reported to have increased over recent years. According to the Ministry of Justice, there were over 115,000 recorded family violence incidents in 2020 alone. The legal system’s response to such cases is critical in addressing underlying societal issues, including respect and communication within families. Interventions by bystanders can play a crucial role in preventing further harm, underscoring the importance of community involvement in domestic violence situations.
