A Kerikeri man, Mark Lagerstedt, is advocating for greater awareness of mental health in hospitals following the death of his wife, Reinhild Langwald. She was admitted to Auckland City Hospital on January 15 for diabetes-related foot issues but suffered two strokes during her month-long hospitalization. Lagerstedt describes her experience as traumatic, marked by daily panic attacks and a lack of proper care, leading to her inability to eat due to a stomach ulcer. Langwald ultimately died of starvation on February 16 at Whangārei Hospital. Lagerstedt believes that if her post-traumatic stress had been recognized, her tragic death might have been prevented.
Why It Matters
This story highlights critical issues surrounding mental health and patient care in hospitals, particularly for individuals with underlying psychological conditions. Mental illnesses can significantly affect patients’ recovery and overall well-being, yet they are often overlooked in clinical settings. Historical data indicates that inadequate mental health support can lead to severe consequences in hospital environments, including extended recovery times and increased mortality rates. Addressing these factors is essential to improve patient outcomes and ensure compassionate care within healthcare systems.
