At least 13 people were injured when a driver plowed into a crowd during the Louisiana Lao New Year Festival on Saturday. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians in the parade, resulting in several serious injuries. Acadian Ambulance reported transporting 11 individuals by ground and two by air to nearby medical facilities. The driver is currently in custody, and preliminary investigations suggest that the incident was not intentional. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed his prayers for the victims and gratitude for the first responders who assisted at the scene.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety during large gatherings and events. Vehicle-related attacks have occurred in various contexts worldwide, prompting discussions about crowd control and emergency response measures. The Louisiana Lao New Year Festival, which celebrates the Buddhist New Year, is a significant cultural event for the local community, making this incident particularly impactful. Local authorities are likely to review safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences at future festivals and parades.
