Anthropic introduces additional fee for OpenClaw access on Claude

Users of OpenClaw, an AI tool that has gained significant popularity for managing tasks like email and calendar organization, will face increased costs starting April 4th at 3 PM ET. Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, has announced that Claude subscription limits will no longer apply to third-party tools like OpenClaw. Instead, users must opt for a separate “pay-as-you-go” billing model to access OpenClaw. This shift follows the employment of OpenClaw’s creator, Peter Steinberger, by OpenAI, leading to speculation that Anthropic is promoting its in-house products such as Claude Cowork. Subscribers will receive a one-time credit equivalent to their monthly plan cost and can purchase discounted usage bundles for additional access.

Why It Matters

This policy change reflects Anthropic’s response to the rising demand for Claude AI and the strain third-party tools place on its infrastructure. The decision to separate billing for third-party tools aims to prioritize resources for users of Anthropic’s proprietary services. OpenClaw’s rapid rise in popularity underscores the growing significance of AI tools in personal productivity, which has prompted companies like Anthropic to reassess their subscription models to ensure sustainable growth and service delivery.
