Preeti Raghwami, who lost her daughter Ziya to mitochondrial disease nearly four years ago, is now on the verge of completing her medical degree. During the Telethon Giving Celebration breakfast, Raghwami reflected on a promise she made to her daughter to help change lives. Ziya passed away just shy of her second birthday due to complications from her condition. Raghwami expressed the importance of her journey, stating that every patient interaction reminds her of her daughter. The event also featured emotional moments, including Raghwami’s eldest daughter Mahi expressing pride in her mother’s work and her own aspirations to find cures for diseases. The Telethon raised a record $90.16 million, which will support 199 programs and various grants focused on child health.

Why It Matters

The Telethon’s record fundraising is significant as it reflects the community’s commitment to supporting children’s health initiatives. This year’s event will enable funding for numerous programs and research grants aimed at improving the lives of children with complex medical conditions. Such efforts contribute to advancements in medical research and patient care, addressing critical needs within the healthcare system. The emotional narratives of families affected by illness highlight the personal stakes behind these charitable endeavors, emphasizing the ongoing need for support and awareness in pediatric healthcare.
