A U.S. Marine, identified as 30-year-old Ryan Weaver from Henderson, Texas, was detained at Palm Springs International Airport after attempting to bring a live 25mm explosive round through security. The incident occurred around 12:05 p.m. on Monday when Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel discovered the round in a checked bag. Weaver claimed he found the ordnance in a field a year prior and mistakenly believed it was inert due to its rust and corrosion, which obscured its identifying markings. The Riverside County Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team confirmed the round was live using X-ray technology and subsequently destroyed it in a desert area. Weaver was released to military authorities following his detention, and the case will be reviewed by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for a potential violation of California Penal Code related to the possession of a destructive device, as well as possible administrative action from the U.S. Marine Corps and civil penalties from the TSA.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding airport security and the handling of potentially dangerous materials. The TSA has strict regulations on the transportation of explosives and weapons to ensure passenger safety. Similar cases in the past have underscored the importance of public awareness regarding the risks associated with unexploded ordnance, as well as the legal ramifications for individuals who fail to report such items. The possession and transportation of explosive devices can lead to severe legal consequences, emphasizing the need for clear communication and education about safety protocols.
