Pensioner trapped under scooter after hitting pothole

An 88-year-old widow, Pat Lowe, suffered severe injuries after her mobility scooter toppled into a pothole while she was walking her dog in Gloucestershire. The incident, which occurred earlier this month, left her with a deep wound on her elbow and blood loss, requiring a five-hour hospital visit. Pat described the scooter nosediving into a water-filled pothole as she attempted to return to the road after letting a vehicle pass. Despite her screams for help, no one came to her aid, as neighbors were distracted by a rugby match. After managing to free herself from under the scooter, she returned home, where her children, both medical professionals, urged her to seek immediate medical attention.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the ongoing issue of deteriorating road conditions in the UK, particularly the prevalence of potholes that can cause serious accidents. Local authorities, including Gloucestershire County Council, have acknowledged the problem, with some roads reported to have gone without resurfacing since 1949. The danger posed by potholes is exacerbated by heavy rainfall, which can mask their depth and visibility. As local governments face budget constraints, the safety of vulnerable road users, such as the elderly, remains a critical concern.
