Israeli attacks impact health services in Lebanon

Israel’s military operations in Lebanon have severely impacted healthcare services, as detailed in a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO). Since the escalation of attacks on March 2, there have been 64 assaults on healthcare facilities, resulting in the deaths of at least 53 healthcare workers and injuries to 91 others. The Israeli strikes have damaged nine hospitals and led to the closure of 50 primary healthcare centers. The Lebanese Health Ministry has reported a total death toll of 1,142, with 3,315 individuals injured due to the ongoing conflict. This surge in violence follows a cross-border assault by Hezbollah and coincides with increased regional tensions, particularly after a joint US-Israel operation against Iran that resulted in significant casualties.

Why It Matters

The current situation in Lebanon is part of a broader regional conflict that has intensified since the US and Israel launched a military offensive against Iran, which has historically supported Hezbollah. The ongoing violence has raised humanitarian concerns, particularly regarding the accessibility of healthcare in Lebanon, where the recent attacks have disrupted vital medical services. The deterioration of health infrastructure in Lebanon could have long-term implications for public health, especially in light of the country’s existing economic challenges and the impact of previous conflicts on its healthcare system.
