Mike Waltz discusses options for military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities

Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz stated that all options remain on the table regarding the U.S. response to Iran’s actions, following President Trump’s threats to destroy Iran’s power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within 48 hours. Trump’s warning, issued via Truth Social, came as Iran’s military effectively closed this critical waterway, which is vital for global oil transport. Waltz emphasized that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), designated as a terrorist organization by several nations, controls much of Iran’s infrastructure, making it a legitimate target. He noted that the U.S. and allied nations, including Italy, Germany, and France, are working together to ensure safe passage through the Strait. Trump has insisted that the U.S. will not tolerate Iran’s threats to global energy supplies.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic maritime chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. Its security is crucial for global energy markets, and any disruption can significantly impact oil prices and international relations. The IRGC’s control over Iran’s critical infrastructure poses a challenge for U.S. and allied efforts to contain Iranian influence in the region. Historical tensions between the U.S. and Iran, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions and military actions, have led to an ongoing geopolitical conflict that affects global security and energy stability.
