Scientists develop human-robot hybrid to create bionic centaurs

Scientists in China have developed an innovative wearable robot that enhances human mobility by adding two mechanical legs, effectively creating a “bionic centaur.” This system, crafted by researchers at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, allows users to walk in a four-legged manner while alleviating the burden of carrying heavy loads. The robot features independent robotic legs and a torso that work in tandem with the human user through a flexible connection, optimizing weight distribution and forward motion. Experimental results show that users carrying loads of approximately 44 pounds experienced a 35% reduction in metabolic energy expenditure and a 52% decrease in foot pressure. This technology could have significant applications in fields such as military logistics, disaster relief, and industrial transport, aiding workers tasked with moving heavy equipment across challenging terrains.
