Two people were killed and five others were injured in a large avalanche in northern Italy. The incident occurred on the slopes of the Hohe Ferse mountain, with a total of 25 skiers caught in the avalanche. A major rescue operation involving six helicopters and around 80 rescue staff was launched to assist those affected.
Why It Matters
The avalanche in northern Italy is part of a trend of high avalanche activity in Europe this season, with a total of 127 deaths reported by mid-March. Experts attribute the increased danger to an unstable snowpack and more skiers venturing off-piste after heavy snowstorms. Rising temperatures and stronger winds, linked to climate change, are seen as contributing factors to the hazardous conditions.
