The US-Israeli war on Iran has highlighted the vulnerability of critical water infrastructure in the water-scarce Gulf region. Desalination plants are crucial for meeting the water needs of the six Gulf states, which rely heavily on this process due to limited natural freshwater sources. With the Gulf countries producing 40% of the world’s desalinated water, the dependence on desalination is evident, with Qatar being the most reliant at 61%. Saudi Arabia, despite producing the most desalinated water, is the least dependent on it at 18%.
