President Donald Trump recently outlined two key legislative priorities in his State of the Union address: passage of the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voting, and a ban on stock trading by Congress members. Trump also emphasized his desire for Congress to refrain from interfering with his tariff policies, asserting that his tariffs could eventually replace the national income tax. While the SAVE Act has support among many Republicans, Senate Majority Leader John Thune opposes changing filibuster rules, which could hinder the bill’s passage.
