Authorities are investigating potential criminal negligence related to an avalanche near Lake Tahoe that killed at least eight skiers on Tuesday. The group, consisting of 11 skiers and four guides, was caught in a large snow slab while returning from a backcountry trip despite avalanche warnings issued two days prior. One skier is still missing, and rescue efforts were complicated by treacherous conditions. This incident marks the deadliest avalanche in the U.S. since 1981.
