New Mexico Woman Charged with Drowning Newborn

A New Mexico woman, Sonia Cristal Jimenez, 38, has been charged with intentional child abuse resulting in death after allegedly giving birth in a portable toilet and drowning her newborn daughter in the holding tank. Hospital staff alerted police when Jimenez arrived without the baby, leading officers to find the infant deceased with evidence of inhaling sanitation liquid. Jimenez was arrested and is being held without bond, while her boyfriend is not expected to face charges. Las Cruces police Chief Jeremy Story described the case as one of the most heartbreaking and disturbing he has encountered.
