Eddie Carvery, a prominent activist for reparations for the former residents of Africville, N.S., has passed away at 79 after battling cancer. Born in 1946 in Africville, his advocacy began in 1970, as he protested the community’s destruction by Halifax for industrial development, living in a trailer on the site for over 50 years. Despite facing eviction orders and legal challenges, Carvery remained dedicated to seeking justice for his community, which was given inadequate compensation after its demolition. His grandson plans to continue his fight for reparations, emphasizing the ongoing connection to Africville’s legacy.
