Operation Hawkeye, launched in retaliation for the killing of two US soldiers and an interpreter by ISIL in Syria, has resulted in the deaths and captures of over 50 fighters and the targeting of about 100 ISIL infrastructure sites. The US military has transferred thousands of ISIL detainees from Syria to Iraq for trial, in response to a request from Baghdad. Meanwhile, Syrian government forces have taken control of the al-Tanf military base previously run by US troops, as the US alliance with Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces comes to an end following ISIL’s defeat in 2019.
