For over a decade, the California State Auditor has alerted lawmakers to issues of waste, fraud, and poor oversight, yet three out of four audit recommendations requiring legislative action since 2015 remain unaddressed. This inaction has contributed to significant problems, including over $20 billion lost to pandemic unemployment fraud and ineffective homelessness spending. Additionally, unresolved recommendations pose risks to public safety, such as unsafe drinking water and unaddressed child abuse cases. CBS News California is developing an “Audit Accountability Tracker” to help the public monitor these outstanding issues and their costs to Californians.
