First Nations criticize Northern Ontario town for staff comment
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A comment by a municipal staff member in Marathon, Ont., during a budget meeting has sparked outrage from nearby First Nations, particularly Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, after a remark was interpreted as racially insensitive. Mayor Rick Dumas clarified that the comment referred to political funding challenges, not Indigenous identity, and issued an apology. Biigtigong Nishnaabeg’s Chief Duncan Michano criticized the response, calling for accountability and the suspension of project support from Marathon. Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg also announced it would halt partnerships until trust is restored.
