Hong Kong leader praises jail sentence for Jimmy Lai
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

US and UK officials are calling for the release of Jimmy Lai, a pro-democracy media tycoon, on humanitarian grounds due to his age and health after he was sentenced to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong. The UN has deemed the sentencing unjust, while Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee stated that Lai’s imprisonment upholds the rule of law. Lai, a vocal critic of China’s Communist Party, was convicted of colluding with foreign forces and sedition. Despite global criticism, China defends the national security laws as necessary to safeguard Hong Kong.
