A patient in Bangladesh died from the Nipah virus, marking the country’s first death from the virus this year, according to the WHO. A small outbreak occurred in India in late January, raising concerns of a potential epidemic. The virus, which is often transmitted through contaminated date palm sap, has a high fatality rate of 45% to 70% and lacks a vaccine or cure. Health authorities across South Asia, including airports in India, have implemented Covid-style health screenings to manage the situation.
