OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce the cancellation of the previous government’s electric vehicle mandate, replacing it with a 75% tailpipe emissions reduction target by 2035 and new purchase incentives for electric vehicles under $50,000. The announcement will include $1.5 billion for expanding EV charging infrastructure and support for Canadian auto manufacturers. Carney aims to diversify Canada’s auto sector investments, particularly from European and Asian manufacturers, following a recent agreement with China to reduce tariffs on EVs. A consultation on a tariff remittance plan will also be initiated amid ongoing CUSMA reviews.
