Report: 27 Tunisian boats sank, 1,000 presumed dead in storm
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that at least 27 of 29 boats from Tunisia sank during storm Harry in January, resulting in hundreds of migrant deaths. While the Italian coastguard estimates around 380 people were lost, NGOs suggest the toll could be at least 1,000. Only two of the boats reached Lampedusa, with survivors describing the central Mediterranean as perilous. NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans condemned the incident as a tragedy, criticizing the inaction of Italian and Maltese governments.
