A recent report reveals that nearly 90% of Auckland primary schools have observed an increase in new entrants lacking basic skills, such as speaking, spelling their names, and using the toilet. The survey, conducted by the Auckland Primary Principals’ Association across 120 schools, found that 92% reported children unable to recognize the letters of their names and struggling with tasks like dressing and pencil handling. New Shoots Children’s Centre director Kelly Seaburg suggested that the issue may be linked to the number of children not attending early learning education (ECE).
