Ex-Mountie convicted of perjury in officer’s trial

A St. John’s judge found former police officer Paul Durdle, 42, guilty of perjury for lying during the trial of Const. Michael Wheeler, who was convicted of firearm-related charges. The charges stemmed from Durdle’s testimony that denied witnessing an incident where Wheeler pointed a gun at Durdle’s then-girlfriend during a social gathering in 2018. Judge Mike Madden determined Durdle lied to protect himself and Wheeler, with sentencing set for March. Durdle, suspended from the RCMP for failing to report the incident, was found guilty on three of five counts related to his testimony.
