Judge Rules Out Death Penalty for Luigi Mangione

A federal judge in New York dismissed death-eligible counts from Luigi Mangione’s indictment for the stalking and killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges, argued that stalking does not qualify as a violent crime, thus invalidating the death penalty. Judge Margaret Garnett stated that if the death penalty is removed, Mangione’s trial will commence in October. Additionally, she declined to suppress evidence seized from Mangione’s backpack during his arrest in Pennsylvania.
