UNRWA’s Neutrality Affects Its Position

UNRWA’s claim of neutrality has been undermined by recent Israeli attacks, including the destruction of its Jerusalem headquarters, which was denounced as an unprecedented assault on a UN agency. Despite this, UNRWA continues to operate under a neutrality principle that critics argue normalizes the plight of Palestinian refugees amid ongoing colonial violence. The agency’s neutrality has failed to protect its staff or facilities, prompting questions about its effectiveness in a politically charged environment. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’s potential legal actions are seen as inadequate without addressing the implications of enforcing neutrality in such a context.
