South Korea’s former prime minister, Han Duck-soo, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for his role in the failed martial law declaration in 2024. He was found guilty of insurrection and assisting former president Yoon Suk Yeol’s orders. The court ruled that Han helped set up a cabinet meeting that facilitated the declaration, describing it as a “top-down insurrection”. After Yoon’s impeachment, Han briefly served as acting president before resigning and calling for a snap election won by Liberal opposition candidate Lee Jae-myung.
