Australian researchers, led by Melbourne University professor Martha Hickey, are spearheading a $15 million international study to explore the connection between menopause and heart disease, the leading cause of death for women globally. The SHE-HEALS study will investigate arterial changes during peri-menopause and assess early prevention strategies, including cholesterol management. Funded by a coalition of cardiovascular research groups, the project spans 13 institutions across seven countries, aiming to reshape clinical guidelines for women’s heart health. Heart Foundation CEO David Lloyd emphasized Australia’s expertise in this vital area of research.
